Preventing Falls: Proper Ladder Use Guide for 2026

Summer is one of the busiest seasons for roofing projects, exterior painting, siding repairs, and general maintenance. With longer days and full job schedules, ladders are constantly in use. Unfortunately, ladder related falls remain one of the most common causes of workplace injuries.

Whether you are a contractor, builder, maintenance professional, or homeowner tackling a project, proper use is critical. At Beth-Allen Ladder & Equipment, we provide top quality ladders, scaffolding, and jobsite equipment trusted throughout the Lehigh Valley. Just as important as having the right one is knowing how to use it safely.

Choose the Right Ladder for the Job

Not all ladders are created equal. Using the wrong type increases the risk of tipping, slipping, or structural failure.

Before starting any project, ask yourself:

  • What height do I need to reach?

  • How much weight will it support?

  • Will I be working indoors or outdoors?

  • Do I need added stability or platform space?

Fiberglass ladders are ideal for electrical work because they are non conductive. Aluminum ones are lightweight and easy to transport. Multi ladders adapt easily to different tasks and are often rated for up to 300 pounds. For larger scale jobs, scaffolding systems may provide a safer, more stable solution.

Choosing properly rated equipment is the first step in fall prevention.

Inspect Before You Climb

Never assume a ladder is ready to go. Even high quality ones require routine inspection.

Before each use:

  • Check for cracks, dents, or bent rails

  • Ensure rungs are secure and clean

  • Confirm locks and spreaders engage fully

  • Inspect feet for wear or damage

If a ladder shows signs of compromise, remove it from service immediately. Damaged equipment significantly increases fall risk.

Set Up on Stable Ground

Improper setup is one of the leading causes of ladder accidents.

Extension Ladder Safety

When using an extension ladder, follow the 4 to 1 rule. For every four feet of height, position the base one foot away from the wall. Ensure the ladder rests on firm, level ground and extends at least three feet above the landing surface for safe access.

Use ladder stabilizers when necessary to improve balance and protect gutters or siding.

Step Ladder Safety

Always open step ladders fully and lock the spreaders into place. Never stand on the top cap or the top step unless it is specifically designed for standing.

Maintain Three Points of Contact

While climbing or descending, keep two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand in contact with the ladder at all times. This reduces the likelihood of slipping.

Avoid carrying heavy tools while climbing. Use tool belts, hoist systems, or have materials handed to you once positioned safely.

Do Not Overreach

Overreaching is a common mistake. If your belt buckle moves beyond the side rails of the ladder, you are leaning too far. Climb down and reposition the ladder instead of stretching to reach your work area.

A few extra minutes to adjust your setup can prevent serious injury.

Consider Scaffolding for Larger Jobs

For projects requiring extended time at height or frequent side to side movement, scaffolding may be a safer option. Easy to install systems with built in safety features allow professionals to scale walls with greater stability.

Beth-Allen Ladder & Equipment offers both scaffold rentals and sales for short term and long term projects throughout Bethlehem, Allentown, and the surrounding Lehigh Valley area.
